Towers – two residential blocks in the centre of Birmingham, UK. Completed in 1971 as part of a social housing development and located adjacent to Birmingham’s Gay Village, the towers’ proximity to the LGBTQ+ community has long made them a haven for queer residents. The 31-minute, 16mm film opens a space for reflection on the complex relationship between architecture, community, and memory. It features testimonials from current and former residents, exploring ideas of queer kinship and inheritance alongside experiences of HIV in the 1980s and ’90s. Dorothy Towers situates the buildings within a historical continuum that stretches from the city’s postwar redevelopment to its nightclubs and modernist underpasses. A live score – composed and performed by Sean Burns and Lai Power – accompanied the film’s initial screening at Vivid Projects, Birmingham, alongside a new installation produced by the local practice Intervention Architecture. Owain Harrison’s accompanying text, A Cornucopia of Experience, merges the factual history of Dorothy Towers – the colloquial name given to the buildings by local LGBTQ+ communities, owing to the number of queer residents – with a fictional narrative based on first-hand testimonials. Dorothy Towers was first screened at Vivid Projects, Birmingham, in September 2022. It has subsequently appeared at Auto Italia and the British Film Institute, London (2023); the Edinburgh Art Festival (2023); TULCA Festival of Visual Arts, Galway (2023); the Attenborough Centre for Creative Arts, Sussex (2023); Goswell Road, Paris (2025); Coridoor Project, Oslo (2025); and the Swiss Architecture Museum (2025). Dorothy Towers Playlist was a documentary film series programmed by Sean Burns for the Flatpack Film Festival, Birmingham. The film was the centrepiece of a solo exhibition at the Edinburgh Art Festival, where the artist hosted workshops on the city’s queer histories in collaboration with partners including Dr Cole Collins, the Lavender Menace Queer Books Archive, and the Lothian Health Service Archive.&nbsp; A selection of press links is available here.&nbsp; Dorothy Towers was supported by Arts Council England, National Lottery Heritage Fund and Paul Hamlyn Foundation. of Queer Arts and Culture, Grand Union, Birmingham, and Baltic, Gateshead. Between 1986 and 1990, In The Pink was published monthly at the Trade Union Resource Centre in Digbeth and distributed to groups, pubs, and clubs around the West Midlands. The paper’s content varied from interviews and listings to more political articles, thought pieces and health advice. The November 2018 issue of In the Pink reimagines the original paper, inviting a new group of voices to reflect on Birmingham in the 1980s, share personal and collective histories and discuss some of the matters facing LGBTQ+ people in the region today. It overcomes all in Francis Bacon’s Triptychs and Anna Lea Merritt’s Love Locked Out (1890). From personal responses to general meditations on the fleeting transience of life, Burns looks at the breadth of historical and contemporary works in Britain’s national collection to explore how artists have immortalised death in art. ‘Look Again’ is a new series of short books from Tate Publishing, opening up the conversation about British art over the last 500 years and exploring what art tells us about our lives today. Written by leading voices from literature, art and culture, each book sheds new light on some of the most well-known, best-loved and thought-provoking artworks in the national collection and asks us to look again. He directed the film Dorothy Towers and co-founded Queer Street Press, an independent publishing imprint. He writes extensively on art and culture and serves on an advisory council at Tate. He has taught as a visiting lecturer at the Royal College of Art, London, and the Ruskin School of Art, University of Oxford.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Burns’s film work has been presented internationally, including at Auto Italia and the British Film Institute, London; the Edinburgh Art Festival; TULCA Festival of Visual Arts, Galway; Goswell Road, Paris; and the Swiss Architecture Museum, Basel. In 2023, Tate Publishing released his book Death, which examines the intersections of life, love and mortality in art.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; He has written major profiles of artists including Marlene Dumas and Sang Woo Kim; contributed essays to books, monographs and exhibition catalogues on figures such as Richard Maguire, Jack O’Brien and Jenkin Van Zyl; and conducted interviews with leading cultural figures including Hilton Als, Adam Curtis, Jack Halberstam, Shirin Neshat and Peter Saville.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; In 2024, he received a residency and development grant from Montez Press, with whom he is developing his first novel, forthcoming in 2027.
